Admission System of a Teacher Preparation Program Designed to Allow Access for Diverse Teacher Candidates

ByRobbie Burnett

The demographic makeup of the nation’s teaching workforce continues to perpetuate a mismatch with the degree of racial-ethnic diversity in the population of prekindergarten through Grade 12 (P-12) students. Attempts to increase the diversity of teachers addresses the all-too-familiar achievement or “opportunity” gap in the P-12 educational system. In the state of Minnesota, the rapidly changing demographics (Minnesota Minority Education Partnership, 2012), and the fact that Minnesota has one of the largest achievement gaps between White and non-White students in the nation’s K-12 system (Weber, 2009), have heightened the strategic imperative to intentionally seek faces that reflect those of our P-12 classrooms.
