ABSTRACT

Each step outlined in the chapters in this book guides the consumer to success in his or her own living environment. The consumer is a key participant in the beginning assessment process and ongoing treatment planning. As a full contributor to planning, the consumer plays a key role in determining which areas of treatment he or she is ready to address and which areas to defer until he or she is better prepared to focus on them. Ideally, the consumer and provider work together and establish a frequency and type of treatment that best meets the individualized needs of the consumer. Most important, during this process, the consumer is taught skills and techniques the consumer is able to practice in his or her actual living environment and community. Additionally, when the behavioral health provider is knowledgeable, the provider works with the consumer to slowly reduce the intensity and frequency of services so that adequate time is given to each step in treatment. Ultimately, the consumer and provider work together toward discharge, or transition to a lower level of care, with all needed formal and informal support structures identified. The consumer is a full and contributing participant in the entire treatment process.
