ABSTRACT

Many families with chemically dependent children have not had positive models for child rearing. Adolescents who achieve academically would serve as peer tutors. Insufficient adolescent treatment centers for drug and alcohol rehabilitation is another problem of crisis proportions. One takes a very different approach with the chronic adolescent cocaine crack user, as compared with an adolescent who is newly involved in the addiction of alcoholism. With the counselor of the relapse prone adolescent, it is important for the trainer to emphasize specific counselor characteristics. The role of family treatment cannot be emphasized too strongly in combatting relapse. It is important that adolescent relapsers have a longer stay in institutions, than is currently practiced. All counselors would have a thorough grasp of intake, screening, treatment planning and referral skills. A well educated and trained criminal justice system is mandatory if an end to the current crisis situation is desired.
