Developmental Abnormalities in the First Years of Life
This chapter covers two broad areas: Mental Retardation and Perva sive Developmental Disorder (PDD). PDD has been moved back to Axis I, whereas Mental Retardation remains on Axis II. Both are covered here because of their broad, though not inevitable, degree of coexistence. Their different DSM-IV Axis placements are in tended to ensure that a child's intellectual level is not overlooked, since adequate planning for services clearly requires that both intel lectual level and developmental disorders be recorded. Reactive Attachment Disorder of Infancy also remains in this chapter because it is so often confused with these other conditions.
