Schizophrenia is primarily a disorder of young adulthood and so is not in the DSM-IV section on Disorders Usually First Diagnosed in Infancy, Childhood, or Adolescence. However, its relatively fre­ quent occurrence in late adolescence and increasing focus on schizo­ phrenia as a neurodevelopmental disorder, as well as the debate about and probable overuse of this diagnosis for children, prompt our expanded discussion of this diagnosis in childhood.
