ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on research findings and practice implications regarding normative and disability-related aging experiences and issues, effectiveness of specific interventions targeted toward aging adults with developmental disabilities. It focuses on issues related to self-advocacy and empowerment as critical tools for community living and later-life planning. The book describes the role of occupational and physical therapists in assisting the older adult to age in place in the community. It discusses the challenges to aging in place that are experienced by older adults with developmental disabilities, their families and the service community. The book also discusses a literature review of life course planning programs and research focused upon enabling people with developmental disabilities, and important others, to make choices and informed decisions about living situation, estate planning, physical assistance, social support, and activity programming as they age.
