Tracking the pathways to violence in prison

ByKIMMETT EDGAR, IAN O’DONNELL AND CAROL MARTIN

Official statistics give one indication of the rates of fights and assaults, based on the number of times prisoners are charged with an offence against prison discipline by an officer and processed through an adjudication before the governor. However, these figures do not represent the actual rates of violent incidents because prisoners are often reluctant to report incidents to an officer (O’Donnell and Edgar, 1998a: 40-43), and officers sometimes handle incidents informally (Liebling, 2000).
