In 1986, the Mental Health Association in Illinois (MHAI) established the exploration of implementing a primary prevention project in the Chicago Public Schools as one of its program goals. This followed the recommendation of the NMHA Commission on the Prevention of Mental-Emotional Disabilities for programs in the schools - preschool through high school-that incorporate validated mental health strategies and competence building as an integral part of the curriculum.
