ABSTRACT

As part of the land redistribution process, poor peasants were encouraged to speak out publicly against those who had abused or exploited them. The following selection is a villager’s description of how this process worked, as told to William Hinton, author and Sinologist. This particular meeting occurred before 1949, in an area already under CCP control, but it was to be duplicated many times all across China in the early 1950s.
