Protective and risk factors in child health

ByHelen Roberts

Although the National Health Service tends to be seen largely in terms of dealing with illness, health is, of course, a broad concept. The WHO definition, in force since 1948, is that ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (WHO 1948). All the key people in a child’s life contribute to this – teachers, neighbours, health professionals and, where appropriate, other professionals including those in social care.
