ABSTRACT

Date. 1624? H. Fletcher, JEGP 55 (1956) 230–3, shows M.'s fable is a close imitation of one of Mantuan's, and assumes, like Clark 177, 206, 233, it was a grammar-school exercise. E. Haan in Di Cesare 522–3 points out that M.'s poem conforms to an educational practice known as ‘turning of verses’.
