ABSTRACT
After Wellington defeated Napoleon in June 1815 in 'the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life' France capitulated with unexpected swiftness. Ministers in Britain had been digging in for yet another long campaign in a war which had seen most of them young men at the beginning. Peace crept up unawares and adjustment to it proved painful.
