ABSTRACT

The Legend of Good Women (LGW), apparently never finished, consists of a dream prologue and nine short narratives celebrating tragic heroines from classical legend, who died faithful in love and, in most cases, betrayed by the men they loved: Cleopatra, Thisbe, Dido, Hypsipyle and Medea (together in one narrative), Lucrece, Ariadne, Philomela, Phyllis, and Hypermnestra. Hypermnestra’s story is incomplete, ending with the tantalizing line (l. 2723)
