Looking back on ‘Lives in transition’
This book was an opportunity for making voices from Central and Eastern Europe heard. The experiences collated in this book gave us the opportunity to reflect on the lives of people in Central and Eastern Europe, to compare them with our own personal geographies and to relate them to our own personal, cultural baggage. For example, when re-reading the quotes before thinking about the tasks, Alienke and I had many such discussions about our own perceptions and experiences, and the things that are relevant in our lives. In some cases, we found it difficult to put ourselves in the respondents’ shoes. In other cases, we felt there was some overlap as people described some interests or problems that are quite similar to our own. This kind of engagement with the quotes is what we hope to achieve with this book.
