Using Qualitative Methods to Track Evolving Entrepreneurial Identities

ByPhilip Anderson

Qualitative research methods are especially important in the study of entrepreneurship because firms typically enter archival datasets only after they have achieved a certain degree of maturity. For example, industry trade directories usually include new firms only when they first begin selling a product or service, excluding startups that never reach that stage of development. Entrepreneurial organizations are usually not yet formalized, so data from documents, statistics, or organizational information and control systems are seldom available.
