ABSTRACT
This chapter argues that the field of English studies (ES) needs greater integration, that is, more relationships between its parts, its participating disciplines. The various approaches to functional linguistics have the potential to provide greater integration for ES. By contrast with formal linguistics, approaches to functional linguistics explain the language system by relating it to how language functions in communicative situations and contexts of language use. In effect, these approaches relate the language system to other elements of ES.
