ABSTRACT

Typically, a professional development plan focuses on the priorities or greatest needs of the leader. The plan must be clear and manageable and include a means of evaluation. A clear plan lists specific objectives. It should cite actions to take, as opposed to a vague or general intent to improve in a particular area. This could include specific courses, workshops, books, work with a mentor, or a host of other experiences. The intern must research available resources to meet his or her objectives. Objectives may include developing skills, reevaluating dispositions, or attaining new knowledge. A manageable plan includes actions that can be accomplished in a reasonable amount of time. Typically, three to five objectives are included in a three-year plan. This allows the intern time to use or practice the new knowledge, disposition, or skill. A timeline for each objective must be included. The plan must cite the criteria used to judge whether the objective was met. Ideally, this would be an artifact or other evidence that could be included in the portfolio. The professional development plan is submitted at the final internship report.
