ABSTRACT

Active learning is a catchall phrase used to describe teaching and learning strategies that engage and involve students in the learning process. Active learning teaching strategies include cooperative learning, learning styles theory, multiple intelligences theory, and project-based learning. Resource interdependence involves sharing the resources needed to complete an activity. The shared resources can be information, materials, or equipment. A division of labor, requiring the actions of one team member to be completed before the work of another can begin, is duty interdependence. Group processing distinguishes cooperative learning teams from group work. The use of carefully structured and monitored cooperative learning strategies in the classroom can lead to some exciting outcomes for students. The traditional education system focuses on and rewards the abstract learner, leaving many students with the choice of adapting for survival or leaving school. Teams need to be given time at the conclusion of a team session or activity to reflect on their team and individual performance.
