ABSTRACT

The festival took place in Honduras in 1996-or, to be more precise, it didn’t. There was a website for the event, multiple bands, a compilation CD, and even a book about the scene-but the whole thing was an elaborate hoax by the mischievous Dutchman. The festival only existed on the internet; the bands were invented; the music on the CD was all by him; the book, which he sent to journalists and sociologists, was also by him (under a pseudonym), and also part of the prank. This really is an origin myth. However, Dick el Demasiado was so taken by his own joke that he created a real Festicumex in Buenos Aires in 2003, putting together several bands to play the music that he had written for the fake festival, and this catalyzed the emergence of a digital cumbia scene in the Argentinean capital.
