ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part offers a much-needed counterweight in its discursive analysis of how immigrant subjects are framed on the airwaves of an ostensibly progressive media outlet. It focuses on the largest single immigration raid in US history, the 2008 Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on the Agriprocessors, Inc. meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa. The part provides a meaningful step towards casting mainstream Latina media subjects in more agentive terms. It examines the impact that the media’s discursive framing of “Latin rock” has had on its social reception and ultimately on the terms under which it is disseminated to consumers. The part also offers a much-needed focus on the political economy of popular music, and explores the intricate relationship between transnational Mexican Regional musical production, industry marketing, and violence.
