Introduction

The papers that follow were presented at the Second Western European Specialists International Conference which took place in Florence, Italy, April 1988. The first conference, held in 1983 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, had as its principal goals to stimulate dialogue between U.S. librarians and researchers involved primarily in Western European studies by providing a forum to discuss emerging research trends and the library resources that support research in North America. This event broke new ground in that it was the first large-scale dialogue between specialists collecting and researchers using library materials from and about Western Europe. The conference successfully achieved its aim by having scholars, university and library administrators, and bibliographers step beyond the confines of their individual professional concerns to engage in an exchange of ideas about the broader issues related to the state of and the possibilities for Western European studies.
