ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the ways in which the database can be used by scholars, the manner in which academic libraries act as purveyors or mediators of ARTFL's services, and the types of support to be provided by academic departments for these services. As scholars discover the significance of the texts and the analytical potential of the programming, ARTFL-based research will become an increasingly important tool for academic research on French subjects. ARTFL announced the acquisition of a Kurzweil text transcribing machine which will allow ARTFL users, at no cost, to submit specific typescripts or printed texts for immediate transcription into the database. In conjunction with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, undertook the creation of a full-text database consisting of over 1,500 complete texts from French literature, philosophy, history, and related fields which would serve as a basis for the compilation of the lexicon itself.
