ABSTRACT

The historical lines are precisely inscribed in events and situations with memorable dates which, with certain frequency and in precise circumstances, coincide in a synchrony of heterogeneities. The general model changes the entire domain of signs, and the eye or signifying gaze regulates and decides those historical subjects who will be the vessels of those privileges. The industrial imagination transforms the measure of the world, temporality, space: the ancient humanist dream of pushing technical progress and cultural progress forward simultaneously is installed as an ideological fantasy. The gaze that is legitimated works from on high, in circular curvatures sent back by the distorted signs, obeying a logic of refractions, with their simulacra of equality and democracy. The perspective of Engels's gaze lays bare the figures of the technological imagination and its relations with the surface and the hidden, the seen and the unseen, the truth and the untruth of representations.
