In the past several years public libraries have been alerted to a serious flaw in their reference services. In our modern, information based society there are a number of completion forms of information outlet. Can the public library continue to fulfill its role as the primary information provider? If large public library systems with great diversity of resources can correctly answer only 55% of the questions posed to them, what does this mean for all of the small public libraries in rural communities?1 Does our role become even more diminished due to our lack of financial and material resources?
