Information is one key ingredient for success in business and scholarship today, and standards are the foundation of all information systems. Many people think of standards as the “plumbing” that supports the system. However, technical standards provide more than plumbing-they provide the infrastructure that makes information systems and databases less expensive to develop, easier to use, and universal in value. Just as a house would collapse if its infrastructure were weak, an information system cannot remain standing or evolve without an extensible and robust support structure.
