Food grammar

ByJUAN JOSÉ CADILLO-BENALCAZAR, MARIO GIAMPIETRO,

This chapter presents a grammar for the integrated accounting of food energy flows across the various compartments of society defined at different scales. The internal view on food metabolism focuses on food consumption and flows of nutrient carriers; the external view focuses on food production and flows of agricultural commodities. The food grammar bridges the internal and external views and takes into account the complications introduced by the internal autocatalytic loop of food (consumption of food for production of food). The application of the food grammar to a specific case is illustrated with data from the Mauritius case study.
