Experiential Approaches to Family Therapy
Imagine family therapists such as Virginia Satir and Carl Whitaker walking into your classroom and telling you that education, knowledge, and cognitive skills do not change families, but experience does . What does this mean? Whose and what experience is Whitaker talking about? Is Satir really not interested in changing clients’ families? Change is what family therapy is all about, right? What does Satir mean by “ﬁ nding their rhythms” and going “inside to those scary places”? What scary places does she have in mind?
