According to Habermas (2001), journalism in its ideal form serves as a ‘‘mediator and intensifier of public discussion’’ (p. 76). This role is particularly central in a structurally pluralistic community (i.e., one markedly differentiated along institutional and group lines), where diverse interests rely on the media as a venue for voicing their concerns and resolving conflicts, for gaining knowledge of other sectors of society, and for coordination-and rationalization-of the distribution of limited resources (Tichenor, Donohue, & Olien, 1980).
