This essay attempts to “step back” and to present some observations about changes in libraries that will surely lead to fundamental shifts in the cooperative cataloging landscape. These ideas are probably obvious to most of CCQ’s readership. I am grateful for the opportunity to make sure they are stated for the record, however, lest future generations reviewing our published literature conclude that librarians in the first decade of the twenty-first century were too busy arguing over more detailed matters to see “the writing on the wall.”
