ABSTRACT

Different opinions exist regarding the economic value of hosting major sports events. Many consultancy reports conducted on behalf of event organizers predict positive impacts for the local economy and its residents—both in the short and long term. This, however, does not correspond with the opinion of many economists who have been sceptical and accused those producing the consultancy reports of exaggerating the benefits and underestimating the costs (Crompton, 1995;Mules, 1998;Porter, 1999;Hultkrantz, 1998;Baade ampentity Matheson, 2002,2004; Preuss, 2004b; Késenne).
