ABSTRACT

The divisions of the work force intended by the segmented and hierarchical system include the distinctions between full- and part-time workers and those who fall between those categories. Almost everyone aspires to be ‘permed’ – Permanent Full Time – at which point down pour the manna of Disney benefits. The dividing and subdividing of Disney workers and their jobs continues in their placement: they can work on property or off, on stage or backstage; they may be assigned to a department, which is further divided by park, by area, and by attraction. Then they are given a specific position within the attraction, shop, or restaurant. The relentless categorizing and subdividing of employees by place, type, and amount of work has the effect of encouraging workers’ identification with their area, their immediate group, rather than with other people in the park who might be doing similar things but in different places.
