ABSTRACT

One common intervention used in the management of acute or chronic musculoskeletal injuries is the use of nonsteroidal anti-inÀ ammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They are used to control pain and to limit the amount and duration of inÀ ammation. Although the use of NSAIDs has become a widely accepted treatment of minor musculoskeletal injuries in sport, there is a growing view that NSAIDs have only modest results in the management of such injuries (Almekinders 1999 ; Paoloni et al . 2009 ). This chapter describes how NSAIDs work, explores their effectiveness, and investigates how prevalent use is amongst athletes.
