In her chapter, Managing Substance Abuse Issues in Groups Not Specifically for Substance Abusers, Marsha Vannicelli takes up precisely this dilemma. What are the issues attendant to treating group members with substance abuse problems in groups in which the members or the leader have little knowledge about substance abuse or models of recovery. What is the leader to do at times when the substance abuser is not even interested in recovery? Vannicelli explores different management strategies for the therapist, describes common hurdles that exist, and addresses two diffident philosophies of substance abuse treatment, namely, the abstinence model and the moderation model.
