Extraordinary Events in Group Therapy

WithELIZABETH L. SHAPIRO & RACHEL GINZBERG

Introduction Extraordinary events in group therapy are unexpected events that pose personal and professional challenges beyond those faced in the normal course of group life. These extraordinary events include, for example, the death or illness of a leader, the death or illness of a group member, or a tragedy that occurs outside of the office but which impacts some or all of the group occupants. These events need to be carefully managed by the leader (or a new leader), and may change the future trajectory of the group.
