The care of the mentally ill in Taiwan

WithKai-Da Cheng, Yu-Chen Lin, Cheng-Chung Chen, Winston W. Shen

The name “Taiwan” comes from an aboriginal term. Since the 16th century, Taiwan was renamed “Formosa,” meaning IIha Formosa, “Beautiful Island” in Portuguese (Mateo and Eugenio, 2002).Taiwan is located east of China, south of Korea and Japan, and north of the Philippines. The area of Formosa (Mateo and Eugenio, 2002), i.e. Taiwan, is about 36,000 square kilometers (14,400 square miles), and the length of Taiwan from the south to the north is greater than its width (Executive Yuan, 2011). The shape of Taiwan island is like the shape of a sweet potato. The Taiwanese thus identify themselves proudly using the nickname, “we are from sweet potatoes.”
