Hong Kong is a small island with an area of 1,104 km2. It is located between the Taiwan Straits, the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, making it a strategic city for traffic in Asia and across the globe. It covers the island of Hong Kong, Kowloon peninsula, the New Territories and islands such as Lamma Island and Lantau Island where the world famous Chek Lap Kok international airport is situated. In 1842 after the first Opium War, sovereignty over Hong Kong was handed from China to the United Kingdom and it became a British colony through three different treaties: the Treaty of Nanking (1842), the Treaty of Beijing (1860) and the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong territory (1898). In 1997, Hong Kong was handed back by the British crown to become a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.
