History and perspective on psychiatry in Japan
Japan is an island nation in East Asia. According to the Government, Japan’s population was estimated to be around 128 million as of 2010 (www.e-stat.go.jp/SG1/estat/List.do?bid= 000001034991), the world’s tenth most populous country. The land area is 377,923 km2 in total, which is roughly equal to that of Germany. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was US$5,960 billion in 2012, the third largest in the world. Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world at 86.4 and 79.6 years of age for females and males, respectively (www.mhlw.go.jp/toukei/saikin/hw/life/life09/01.html). However, Japan has experienced net population loss due to a decrease in birth rate, making it face the concerns of a growing ageing population combined with a low birth rate.
