Illegal Networks or Criminal Organizations: Structure, Power, and Facilitators in Cocaine Trafficking Structures

A considerable body of knowledge has examined drug dealing, especially from an ethnographic perspective (Adler, 1985, 1992; Reuter & Haaga, 1989; Dorn, Murji, & South, 1992; Natarajan & Belanger, 1998). These studies try to understand the subjects involved in different illegal markets, how they protect themselves, the roles they play, or their social organization. Regarding the organizations or networks involved in drug smuggling, we can distinguish among importers (high level) (Reuter, 1985; Reuter & Haaga, 1989), wholesale suppliers (midlevel), and retailers (lower level or street-level dealers) (Adler, 1985).
