Strategic Positioning in Mafia Networks

WithFrancesco Calderoni

Individuals in criminal groups are constantly faced with a trade-off between security (minimizing risks) and efficiency (maximizing opportunities/profits). Individuals achieving a good balance in this trade-off-i.e., those managing to maintain control over criminal opportunities and activities while reducing the risk of detection-are strategically positioned and more likely to succeed in their criminal careers (Bouchard & Nguyen, 2010: 132; Morselli, Giguère, & Petit, 2007).
