Fifteen countries in the southern part of Africa organised themselves into the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Originally established as a coordinating conference (SADCC) in 1980, it was transformed into an intergovernmental organisation in 1992 aiming to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth and socioeconomic development through productive systems, cooperation and integration, good governance, and durable peace and security among member states. The main objective on foreign policy is coordination and cooperation, but a tighter coordination is in progress for trade and economic policy with a view to one day establish a common market with common regulatory institutions (World Bank, 2013b).
