Corporate investment in China: more problems than solutions?

INTRODUCTION The 'open door' policy instituted by the Chinese government in 1978 was one aspect of its modernization programme, the aim of which was to attract investment to a country whose commercial doors had been closed to the outside world for many years. It was intended that much of the technology, both hardware and software, which China needed to attract in order to advance itself economically, should come through the medium of joint ventures entered into in partnership with overseas companies (Yu 1988: 176).
