ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the development of a case study which focuses on the experiences and perceptions of contingent migrant labour in the Kuwait construction industry. It also examines migrant labour growth in Kuwait and discuss the way in which the employment relationship and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is managed within the Kuwaiti regulatory framework. The vast body of empirical studies on the subject of accident causation, the OHS literature has failed to produce a research approach which focuses on migrant workers emotions, perceptions and experiences relating to their working lives and therefore their health and safety. The Kuwaiti political, social, economic and legal milieu discussed in this chapter has had a significant impact on the currently developing occupational health and injury status of contingent, migrant labour. The chapter also explores the way in which changes in the law affect the experiences and perceptions of workers in relation to their employment relationship and their health and safety.
