ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the polycentric structure in Mexico City's urban space using employment data from 1989 and 1999. It identifies the economic sector predominating in each Basic Geo-Statistical Areas (AGEB), as well as by metropolitan rings. Downtown Mexico City has been depopulated and, second, there has been population redistribution towards the urban periphery, with high growth rates. Within the Central Business District (CBD) the Benito Jurez and Venustiano Carranza delegations showed the greatest gains, with increases of over 60" and 40", respectively. Manufacturing activities were shifting towards nodes in third metropolitan ring as of the 1980s, and in the 1990s, commercial activity entered some nodes. In terms of employment gain, the Cuautitln Municipality is outstanding, with an increase of 61" in sub-centres, such as: Luna Parc Cuautitln and Leche Alpura en Avenida Mxico-Teoloyucan, while Ford Cuautitln and the Symrise Cuautitln are nodes that lost jobs.
