ABSTRACT

This chapter uses "real world" experience to identify what some of the challenges are and to suggest strategies that might be adopted to overcome them. It focuses on three areas: how the institutional repositories (IR) fit with the university organisation, how to promote the use of the IR to end users and contributors, and how to secure long-term benefits for the broadest range of stakeholders. The Information Technology (IT) department is a key player in the developing use of repository data. Bibliographic data form part of the information that flows through the networks and applications that IT departments maintain and deliver. Human Resources (HR) departments have a number of points of contact with bibliographic data and possibly require a repository solution or at least research information management. Communicating research outputs to a wider audience can be a key role for the repository. The example of Keele University demonstrates a repository that is dedicated to learning materials.
