ABSTRACT

Michael Burgess, primarily known as one of the leading members in the community of researchers on federalism, has continuously paid much attention to the European integration process and the EC/EU, the result of that process. He has submitted substantial contributions to the academic debate on how to understand, explain and describe both the integration process and the EU as a polity, namely a new type of a ‘union’ (of states and peoples) without any historic precedent. He has drawn on his knowledge of federalism, federal principles and the federal idea to accomplish this task in a very convincing way.
