ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the three themes: instruments, individuals and institutions. A few general observations are made on the issue of transition management in the context of sustainable transport. The first observation is that a general awareness appears to exist across many parts of society that a transition to more sustainable forms of transport is essential for a variety of reasons including energy security, environmental quality and resource efficiency. Second, the contributions have illustrated that there are a wide range of different interpretations of transition management and sustainable transport. The third general observation is that the contributions to the chapter have illustrated that a range of different theoretical and empirical approaches is used to investigate transition management and sustainable transport, particularly since the topic has a diversity of economic, social and environmental dimensions. Focusing primarily on the national level, Avelino et al. examine the emergence of transition management in Dutch transport and energy policies.
