ABSTRACT

As political and diplomatic ties will deepen, and trade and investment increase in the years ahead, the relationship between India and Brazil will take on greater importance (Roett 2010, 38). Both are large emerging countries that hold similar principles on democracy, human rights, global governance, and liberal strategies. They are partners on the basis of trade relations but have a lot to learn from each other in other domains, with tremendous potential to grow bilaterally. Since the BRIC initiative is more focused on development and policy initiatives, Brazil and India have started the process of coming closer. For example, the direct cash transfer scheme to be launched in India has been inspired by the successful Brazilian plan called Bolsa família (Costa 2012, 17).
