ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the geographical contribution to the complex theme of interdependence by tracing the socio-spatial lives of People with intellectual disabilities (PwID) in the community. It examines the issues of care and dependency for people with Intellectual disability (ID). The chapter identifies the spatially contingent nature of caregiving relationships. It reveals the scope of care relationships by examining the wider nested dependencies inherent in the lives of PwID in the community. The chapter discusses a spatially informed approach to care that looks at the multiplicity of care relationships as well as the socio-spatial contexts in which they occur. It focuses on the wider set of network relationships and the role of interpersonal relations between all parties involved in the caring nexus, such as siblings, members of the public, agencies, and mainstream local service providers.
