ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the dynamics of belonging and offers a perspective that suggests that the fullness of the body of Christ is dependent on the fullness of its welcome to those perceived as different. It also explores something of the tension between inclusion and belonging and lays out some possibilities for the church as the body of Jesus to become a place of radical hospitality, not just for people with disabilities, but for all of Jesus' disciples. Disability theology is the attempt by disabled and non-disabled Christians to understand and interpret the gospel of Jesus Christ, God and humanity against the backdrop of the historical and contemporary experiences of people with disabilities. Imagine for a moment that they chose to move with the divine rhythm of guesting and hosting. Reflecting on disability in these ways draws attention to another important observation: At key points in God's plan of salvation he uses disabled people as key players.
