A garden where plants could be seeded, transplanted and propagated, and where their development could be examined and monitored in detail was one of Ghini’s fundamental requirements, and one of the reasons why he le the University of Bologna where he could not obtain funds to establish it. e fact that Duke Cosimo was willing to support his project was probably what convinced Ghini to accept his invitation to lecture on simples at Pisa.1
